In this method and this appliance, the containers C to be subjected to pasteurisation temperatures are labelled with plastic labels which are wound around the body of the container. The labels are made from a preglued material which may be in the form of a continuous strip or in the form of individual labels. The adhesive or glue is a polymer activated by heat, in an aqueous medium, which crosslinks under the effect of the heat. The containers and the labels are transported as far as a position where the front edge of the label comes into contact with the glue present on the label. The container is preheated, or the glue is heated so as to adhere to the container. The container is made to roll over the label so as to roll the label around the container and the overlapping end of the label also has glue activated by heat which comes either from the container, or from hot air blown on the glue before it welds itself against the front edge of the label. In this manner, an encircling label made from thin plastic may be glued to a container containing a product which is to be pasteurised.
