    The present invention is concerned with certain novel process for the preparation of quinolonecarboxylic acid derivatives of the following formula, wherein R<1> is a lower alkyl group, X is a chlorine or bromine atom and Y is a halogen atom, which are useful intermediates for the synthesis of antibacterial agents.
