    To obtain a cellulose fiber product rich in edible fibers and not practically contg. nutritive substance or ash by carrying out delignification and bleaching with an alkali soln. of a peroxide under specified conditions. A nonligneous lignocellulose material is slurried with an aq. alkali soln. of pH 10-13 at about 25-100 deg.C and the resultant slurry is held for a sufficiently long time practically in the absence of a peroxide to wet the material. An enough water-soluble peroxide is then added to the alkaline slurry and the material, is delignified and bleached with the resultant alkaline peroxide soln. whose pH is preferably >=9.5 under such conditions of temp. and time as to form practically bleached cellulose fibers. The pref. temp. is >=55 deg.C. The resultant product is separated and low calorie edible fibers freed of lignin and nutritive substance and having a significantly reduced ash content are obtd.
