Provided is a discharge lamp lighting system capable of lighting two or more kinds of hot cathode type discharge lamps mutually differed but relatively close to each other in rated power consumption with a common discharge lamp lighting device and bringing the light output of the respective discharge lamps close to a rated light output, and a lighting system using it. An electrode heating device 19 changes an electrode heating power according to the frequency of a high frequency generator 12. When a discharge lamp with a relatively large lamp power is lighted, for example, the output frequency of the high frequency generator 12 is minimized, and the electrode heating power from the heating device 19 is reduced. Since the output power of the generator is controlled to be constant, it gets close to a rated power consumption by the portion of the difference in electrode heating power, and consequently to the rated light output. |
