To provide a method and an apparatus for laser-beam-welding a plurality of overlapped flat plate workpieces having a coating film on their surfaces, by which method and apparatus, a heating range and a heating quantity can be easily adjusted, and defects of the workpiece surfaces can be substantially eliminated. Electric current is supplied to an uppermost workpiece W1 by bringing electrodes 2, 3 into contact with the workpiece W1. As a result, the contact portions of the workpiece W1 with the electrodes or the contact portions of the workpiece W1 with the electrodes and heat-conducted portions of the neighboring workpiece W2 to be heated from the contact portions of the electrodes with the workpiece W1 are thermally expanded. Next, the deformed portions Q are formed by contracting the expanded portions. Then, a gap H is formed between the overlapped workpieces W1, W2 by separating the deformed portions Q from the neighboring workpieces W1, W2 with each other. Then, the position where the vapor produced by the vaporization of the heated coating film can volatilize in the gap H is irradiated with a laser beam L. |
