The invention provides a recording apparatus capable of improving throughput in the case where the recording apparatus has different settings for the stop position of a recording medium at the start of recording. A control unit has information about a plurality of speed levels (V3-V1) as the rotational speed for the transport roller, a plurality of recording modes for leading end margins and information (P1-P3) about recording start positions different from each other in each recording mode, and includes an optimum transport speed selecting unit (80b) that, when any one of the recording modes is selected, compares a first distance (L1-L3) from a recording medium sensor (14) to the recording start position with a second distance (M1-M3) of the recording medium transported by the transport roller (19) rotating at a preselected speed level during a deceleration process, and selects the highest speed level among the plurality of speed levels for the transport roller under the condition that the second distance is smaller than the first distance. |
