The invention is able to perform scrub reproduction without duplicating decoding of a reference image. A decoding control section receives streams to be reproduced, frames B13 and B3 for reproduction outputs, and commands on the reproducing speed and the reproduction mode, determines the decoder used for the decoding and decoding sequence, based on an index table and information on the baseband image data stored in a baseband image data memory, and allows the data to be sequentially supplied to a decoding process section. The decoder decodes the supplied data starting from an I2 picture, stores the baseband image data, generated by the decoding, in a baseband image data memory, receives the supply of a reference image from the baseband image data stored in the baseband image data memory in decoding P5, P8, P11, and P14, and executes the decoding based thereon. This invention is applicable to reproducing apparatuses and personal computers. |
