An inverter apparatus wherein the breakdown and malfunction (latch-up) of a high withstand voltage IC are prevented. There are included an inverter circuit, an inverter driving part and a clamping means. The inverter circuit has a bridge circuit which is connected between the positive and negative polarities of a DC power supply and in which an upper arm part, which comprises a reverse-parallel connection of a switching element and a diode in an upper arm, is series connected to a lower arm part which comprises a reverse-parallel connection of a switching element and a diode in a lower arm. The inverter driving part has a high withstand voltage IC that drives the respective switching elements of the upper and lower arms. The clamping means clamps a difference in potential between a reference power supply terminal for driving the lower arm of the high withstand voltage IC and a high-voltage power supply terminal for driving the higher arm of the high withstand voltage IC.
